VIOLENCE IN ECUADOR IMPACTS THE TOURISM SECTOR IMAGE

Images of the attack in Ecuador have been widely broadcast on television channels around the world. The subsequent declaration of an “internal armed conflict” in the country has resulted in the cancellation of several reservations by international tourists. This situation is feared to be dealt a blow worse than the Corona virus pandemic.

Raul García, president of the Chamber of Tourism of Pichincha, a province whose capital is Quito, admits that these conditions affect them and lead to many cancellations. Ecuador’s image abroad has been damaged, which has had a significant impact on the tourism sector. However, he has emphasized that the country’s main tourist destinations are functioning as normal.

Despite numerous violent incidents attributed to organized crime, such as car bombings and fires, kidnappings and murders of police officers, prison riots with hostages, and takeovers of the television medium, the country continues to function.

Transportation and safety

Despite canceling some flights over the past two days, airports are fully operational with tight security measures in place. Public transport still runs but with fewer passengers, especially on inter-provincial journeys. Police and military patrols are seen on the streets in some areas.

Gradually revitalizing the tourism sector

The number of people coming to Ecuador is gradually increasing. Still, some popular tourist spots are closed, such as the Plaza Grande, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, and parts of the Malecon in Guayaquil. The president, Lennon Moreno, expressed his concern that recent incidents of violence and insecurity in Ecuador have negatively affected the country’s image on the world stage. However, he emphasized that these events are local to specific regions, not the most frequented tourist destinations, such as the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon.

Warnings and calls to Ecuador

Various countries have advised their citizens to take extra safety and security measures while in the country and travel only when necessary. However, Garcia is inviting everyone to visit Ecuador and assures that the private tourism sector and authorities have taken the necessary steps to ensure the welfare of tourists and avoid any inconvenience. They even believe that declaring an “internal armed conflict” could provide more protection.
